A dedicated team of people are working behind the scenes to deliver the vision of Global Day of Prayer London, including:
David Hawkins was consecrated bishop on 17 October 2002. He began his public ministry as Anglican Bishop of Barking in the Diocese of Chelmsford in January 2003. Before being made bishop, David led the congregation of St George’s, Leeds and the St George’s Crypt charity for the homeless. His work with the crypt gave him a real insight into the problems of those who are socially excluded and/or struggling with addictions. During his time in Leeds David was also Chaplain to the Yorkshire Cricket Club. Before this David served for four years in the parish of St Aldates’s, Oxford with a special responsibility for the congregation of St Matthews, and, before that, he was a mission partner with the Church Mission Society: serving in Bida in the Kaduna Diocese of Northern Nigeria. David served his curacy at St Andrew’s, Bebington in Merseyside. David combines a very busy work life with an equally busy family life. He is married to Carole and they have three daughters; Rhoda, a research physicist; Naomi, an assistant clinical psychologist; and Bethany, a student at Oxford. Carole is a social worker by profession with an interest in mental health promotion and family therapy. Recent posts include Project Manager of Leeds Bereavement Forum and Chaplain of Richard’s House, a children’s hospice in Beckton, East London. Work and home life aside, David enjoys many outdoor activities including mountaineering (he has successfully climbed Mount Kenya and Mount Kilimanjaro); sailing, birdwatching and cross-country running. He also has the distinction of having spent his 40th birthday on the end of a parachute … David enjoys music, poetry and is also an artist. His most recent exhibition, entitled Mene Mene, was held in Leeds in 2005. David and Carole live in the heart of the inner city, in Walthamstow, East London – living and working amongst the people they serve.
